Please am planning a 2011 or 2012 500 miler on horseback --- i desperately need some suggestions -- at very first blush i am looking at yosemite north -- my sister and a good friend can help me in that stretch --- my daughter is in Portland so oregon would also be a choice

Hi, will be interestd to see your progress. I have used walk and lead pack burros for about 5 years now. You might be interest in a book by Charles Johnson Post called "Horse Packing - A Manual of Pack Transportation" now out in reprint, orig. pub. 1914. I wish I had this earlier, as it could have saved me some time getting a saddle to fit. You definitely should look at the section on Aperajos- home built pack saddles that only needed a knife and basic sewing tools to make or repair. I would definitely get a good 100% wool shirt and longjohns. flannel is worse than useless- it never dries out until it is too warm to be needed, and wears out too fast. for waterproof outerwear, check into Filson- it has gone "upscale" advertising to flyfishing yuppies, but is still the same oil cloth clothing that has been used in the woods for over 100 years. Use it myself. Although it needs a recoat here and there, it doesn't tear as badly as typical slickers. Anyway, good luck, and take care. rm condon
